Ashei In Global Online Competition To Win $10,000

Quite possibly one of Christchurch’s most driven rock bands, Ashei have their eyes quite literally on the prize in the form of a $10,000 kitty given away on an international online fan voted-based competition for emerging artists, called ArtistSignal. Fans can vote for their favourite acts once per hour, 24 hours a day, for an entire calender month. In return, fans can claim rewards offered in returns for the amount of votes they place in the month. At the end of each month, ArtistSignal awards one artist with the most votes $10,000USD to go towards the development of their music career. Another $5,000USD is split amongst all other competing artists from around the globe. Just 7 days in to this month’s competition so far and Ashei have truly taken off, having cleverly prepared their fans, friends and family for the weeks leading up to October. But nothing could have prepared them for the silent giant that was about to wake up in the form of a dutch metal band called Stream of Passion; who have an impressive 97,000 FB fans, had a successful $70,000 crowd-funding campaign, and have worked under labels to release 3 past albums. Shaken, but not losing sight of their goal, Ashei have fought to recruit as many new passionate voters as they can to maintain their lead on the competition. With Stream of Passion recruiting more and more of their expansive amounts of fans each day, Ashei need New Zealand’s help to secure the victory and make it all the way to the end to collect the hard-earned prize.

On the live front

Our Songs From the South as part of Arts Festival Dunedin 2014
‘Our Songs from the South’, happening in Dunedin this weekend, is a concert of acoustic collaboration featuring Dunedin’s very own Delgirl with Invercargill’s Into The East, and introducing Jake Cropley. This will be an extravaganza of folk, country and roots music at its finest with a grand finale of all the performers together on stage featuring much loved songs from the South of their own and of others. Delgirl have previously landed the Recording Industry Association (RIANZ) Award for Folk Album of the Year, for their debut long player ‘Two, Maybe Three Days’  Ride’ in 2008. Since busting onto the scene as a pair of Southern unknowns, Graeme Woller and Liv McBride of IntoThe East have gathered a strong following thanks to their crystalline sound that has been described as Fleetwood Mac with the poetic & harmonic charm of Simon & Garfunkel. Into The East have picked up nominations for Best NZ Folk Album, along with a nomination for the highly regarded Taite Music Prize, and won APRA Album Of The Year and Band Of The Year at the 2014 Southland Entertainment Awards. Jake Cropley is a year 12 Kings High School student, and winner of the ‘Play It Strange ‘ Commonwealth Games baton song competition. Venues and ticket information here.

Goodshirt ‘Sierra Leone’
Goodshirt are pleased to announce their latest creation, a dynamic 80’s synth fuelled cover version of the 1983 kiwi pop classic ‘Sierra Leone’ by Coconut Rough. The band enjoyed jamming on it so much they started playing it live, hence the cover single was born. Goodshirt enlisted New York animation company Circle Line Projects, the cooperative of Ana MouyisZachary Zezima and kiwi spatial artist, Tim Brown to make the music video, giving them total creative license. Inspired by the song and by the works of Len Lye, the creators combined different media such as live-action footage on green screen, hand painted textures and imagery, video, digital animation and animation scratched into 35mm film.  The new video is premiering exclusively on the NZ Herald website this week. View the video here. To celebrate the release, Goodshirt are giving away their single for free on Soundcloud. Goodshirt are performing at The Tuning Fork on December 17th playing support for Evan Dando and the Lemonheads. Stay tuned for forthcoming singles and shows in the near future.

In a ‘PIKDAT Profile’ Jono Das commented on the birth of this colab and friendship.
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Beau Jefferies, ‘The Lion & The Lotus’  is not constrained to be a collaboration only between the two but instead hosts many of their contemporaries within the local hip-hop scene such as beat maker Christop El’ TruentoThird3ye member MeloDownz, Yayne, eo, and Danny Watts. The release of this EP comes of the back of the release of three singles; ‘Take Flight’, ‘UniVerse (Prod. Christop El’ Truento)’, and the latest release ‘Indigenius’ feat MeloDownz (Third3ye). Angelo King weaves a web of intricate lyricism, fusing expansive subject matter with acute reflections of socialised constructions. Jono Das’ beat-driven soundscapes smoothly propel tastefully crafted jazz-influenced drum samples with crisp production.

Dad Jokes join MUZAI
Having toured Canada, the United States and Australia, Auckland (NZ) punk-duo Dad Jokes now settle into a new home – MUZAI Records, who are set to release their new EP, Bad Friends, from October 24th 2014*. With Ian and Matt previously making appearances opening for Astro Children and BBQ-ZAI in 2014, long has been the discussions between both Dad Jokes and MUZAI Records working together after the release of True Love, their previous work released through Arcade Recordings. What listeners get is the release of a four track EP, Bad Friends – recorded after the band played punk festival Ottawa Explosion by Nick Botka (with help from Michael Ryan Dellinger) at Seattle’s Vera Project. Proudly wishing to inform readers of this media release that it was recorded direct-to-tape, the EP is evocative of the band’s live performances; that being a track-by-track sing along best accompanied by mountains of pizza and beer. Mastered by Auckland engineer/musician Tom Anderson only heightens the scuzzy beauty of such an EP.

Around the World

The Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards have come to a close for another year, with Mansfield rockers Violent Soho, Courtney Barnett and ascendant Melburnian Remi all emerging as the major victors of the evening, which is orchestrated by AIR (the Australian Independent Record Labels Association).

REVIEW AND GALLERY OF THE NIGHT HERE

Barnett and the lads of Violent Soho both took home two awards apiece — the former for the presitigious title of Best Independent Artist and Best Independent Single/EP (Avant Gardener), and the latter for their world-beating third LP Hungry Ghost, which gave them both Best Independent Hard Rock, Heavy Or Punk Album (a category in which they faced stiff competition from the likes of DZ Deathrays and sleepmakeswaves) as well as all-round Best Independent Album.

Remi picked up one award – he staved off fellow nominees L-FRESH The Lion, Allday, Horrorshow and Thundamentals for Raw x Infinity to take out Best Hip-Hop Album – but also walked away $50,000 richer as the recipient of the Carlton Dry Global Music Grant. That kind of victory can be simply life-changing for an artist – just ask last year’s winners (and 2014 Hard Rock Album nominees) King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.

Brissy-bred pop juggernauts Sheppard came away with the title of Brakthrough Independent Artist Of The Year, which should surprise no one who’s looked a chart in the past year – love it or hate it, their ubiquitous singleGeronimo catapulted them to almost-instant fame, with debut album Bombs Away keeping up the momentum. Fellow Brisbanites Halfway also walk away a prize up on when they walked in, taking out Best Country Album (forAny Old Love from esteemed fellow nominees including the Perch Creek Family Jugband, Davidson Brothers and Sara Storer.
